 Real Madrid Santiago Bernabeu History

The home of Real Madrid was born on December 14, 1947, on a cold winter afternoon. It was built on the outskirts of the city but since the city has grown around it the stadium is now in Madrid’s heart. The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is today one of the symbols of the capital; the stage on which Madrid’s citizens have realized their dreams. Here have been seen some of the renowned Real Madrid’s greatest sporting feats.

The only club which has six European Cups in a showcase that is visited each year by over 60,000 people.

On December 14, 1947, they played the first match ever at the stadium, which was initially called Chamartin. The match was against Belenenses, of Portugal and Real Madrid won by 3 goals to one.

Santiago Bernabéu, the club’s chairman, realized his dream, convinced as he was of the growing power and popularity of the sport called “football” He had been thought crazy for wanting to build a stadium for more than 100,000 spectators. Time was to prove him right. No sooner had the stadium opened when Bernabéu already was proposing amplifying the stadium to accommodate 125,000 spectators, and this was achieved in 1954. A year later, the Chamartin’s name was changed to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The team responded in the best way possible. Real Madrid won the European Cup for five consecutive years. In the following decades, the site hosted some of the greatest sporting events while improving the comfort and facilities afforded as required by society. A gymnasium was opened. Modern lighting was installed, the administration area re-sited… Now with Luis de Carlos I the presidency, the club faced the moderation of the stadium before the challenge represented by the World Cup in 1982.
